Almost all of the landslide fatalities in the past 30 years in Hong Kong occurred when the Landslip Warning was in force. These fatalities might have been prevented if the public had taken our Landslip Warning messages seriously. That is, when the Landslip Warning is in force, the public should
STAY AWAY FROM SLOPES
and take the following selfâhelp tips:
- You should stay at home or remain in a safe shelter, and pay attention to news of weather and other warnings. For residents close to slopes, stay in rooms on higher floors and/or furthest away from slopes. Keep vigilant, monitor the condition and water out for signs of landslide danger closely.
- Pedestrians should try to stay away from slopes. If possible, use alternative route away from the slopes. Motorists should avoid using the roads with landslip warning signs. Otherwise, please drive through with safe speed. Do not stop unnecessarily.
- If you have received a notification to evacuate from rescuer or believe that your home could be endangered by landslide risks, you should leave immediately if condition permits. Escape by using an exit away from slopes. Stay temporarily at a safe shelter (e.g. relatives' home, village office, or temporary shelter provided by the District Offices or nearby safe shelter provided by voluntary agencies).
- Further guidance on keeping away from slopes when Landslip Warning is in force or during heavy rainfall are given in a separate leaflet "Landslide Self-help Tips".
